Against the backdrop of growing discussions about quantum computers and their potential threat to Bitcoin on the network, one little-known post — dated July 2010is increasingly being remembered. Its author — Satoshi Nakamoto.
In a thread on the forum BitcoinTalk, dedicated to the reliability of hash functions, one of the users expressed concern: what will happen if SHA-256, which is the basis of Bitcoin, turns out to be vulnerable? Is there even a mechanism to transition to something more reliable?
Satoshi responded succinctly but cogently. He compared SHA-256 not to a step from 128-bit to 160-bit encryption, but to a transition from 32-bit to 64-bit addressing — a fundamentally different level of strength reserve. According to him, if a vulnerability does appear, it will not be due to the growth of computing power according to Moore's law, but only as a result of some fundamental mathematical breakthrough. And he immediately added the main thing: if the weakness in SHA-256 begins to manifest gradually — the community will have time to switch to a new algorithm by a certain block number. All network participants will simply update the software, and new versions will start storing hashes of old blocks according to the new standard.
No ready-made «quantum shield» Satoshi did not create — he was a realist and understood that in 2010 such a task was meaningless. But he clearly defined the principle of managed protocol update through consensus of network participants. It is this approach that today underlies the development of BIP-360 and BIP-361 — proposals for transitioning Bitcoin to quantum-resistant signature algorithms.
History shows: the founder of Bitcoin thought about the long-term stability of the network long before quantum threats became part of the mainstream agenda. And the principle he laid down — evolution through consensus, not revolution through coercion — remains Bitcoin's main tool in any future challenges.
